Reaching retirement is an exciting time, especially for those lucky people who have planned well and are in position to make a move to a paradise like Costa Rica. I’ve had quite a few full time retirees purchase property over the years, but the majority of my clients still have a few years to go. ................ What all of them have in common is that they all ponder what they can do or will do with all of their free time in Costa Rica. What is interesting is that for many retirees the ability to truly stop working or thinking about work is actually quite difficult. In fact one of the first things many retirees contemplate is starting some sort of business in Costa Rica. Some of us still need to think about work and producing financial income, no doubt, but for those who have the financial freedom and are indeed retired I think it’s a mistake to continue working, let alone starting a new business. The beauty of living in a country like Costa Rica is the opportunity to enjoy a new lifestyle, with many adventurous and recreational activities. For the more active I encourage retirees to consider golfing, fishing, bicycling, swimming, surfing, hiking, all of which is available all year around in Costa Rica. Just traveling throughout the country is an activity in itself, where you one weekend you can see pristine beaches with the wildlife of the rainforest, and another weekend enjoy the hot springs of Arenal. Another great idea for retirees is to pick up a new hobby or take some classes. Studying spanish would be a helpful tool, but besides that there are countless schools online that make it easily and affordable to study virtually new skill or interest. For those who might still like to get to work and be surrounded by people, volunteering is great way to meet new people and make a difference in the community. There are countless organizations in Costa Rica that would be thrilled to have people help and become more involved.
Retirees in Costa Rica have it good, they have worked hard their entire lives, so in my opinion they should learn to make that transition to living a new lifestyle, the pura vida lifestyle, and leave work and business for the rest of us.
