The past couple years I have seen a large amount of people who have been considering purchasing real estate in Costa Rica trying to decide if they would rather purchase in Florida. This is specifically the case for Canadians........ many of which are just looking to become snowbirds and escape the cold winter months for a warmer climate. I know South Florida fairly well traveling there several times before, however in all fairness I had not been there since moving to Costa Rica, which was over 6 years. Last week I made a quick trip to Miami to visit some family and I took the chance to see South Florida with a new eye. I explored it differently looking more closely at what it offers and why someone would prefer that area to Costa Rica. For me, I have to say I was surprisingly disappointed. I remember Florida being flat, but after being surrounded by lush greenery and mountains for the past few years it was much more noticeable this trip around. Walking along South Beach was nice, and the crowded beach would be a plus if I was single and in my 20s, but I had no tropical view, not like the ones I have of the beaches in Costa Rica, where we have an abundance of palm trees, and backdrops of green jungle and rainforest, not to mention breathtaking sunsets every night. Some people like the comforts and conveniences the U.S. can offer, but every time I go back to the U.S. all I see is an overwhelming push from advertisers and marketers to make people spend their money. The consumerism is flat out ridiculous, and just see people spending most of their free time shopping. The saddest part is every time I travel to the U.S., I just continue to see a deteriorating culture. Sad to say but I just see many Americans (my family and friends included), either tired, stressed, and/or not content. Costa Rica ISN’T the USA. It IS different, and I’m glad it is, but what is important is that if you are considering purchasing property in Costa Rica you recognize those differences and embrace it. You can purchase a beachfront condo anywhere, including Miami, but what you are purchasing in Costa Rica is a lifestyle. You are purchasing a lifestyle surrounded by people who are content with what they have, with people who put their priorities on family, and a country that has as much natural beauty as you can imagine. Costa Rica is not perfect by any means, but that’s okay, because those of us who have discovered and embraced Costa Rica enjoy it for what is and have learned like local Costa Ricans how to be content with what we have. Watch this video to see the great lifestyle and natural beauty found in Costa Rica.

Both Costa Rica and Florida offer great opportunities, but it depends on your priorities. Costa Rica offers lower costs and nature, while Florida has convenience and stability.
