Visiting Costa Rica in the Low Season

The Rainy Season May though December in Costa Rica is the “rainy season”. Of course that makes many people who have never been to Costa Rica think that it might be something like Seattle or London, cold, overcast and dreary. Because Costa Rica is a tropical climate [...]

rain here is much different than up North. A typical day in May or June in Jaco Beach will begin with beautiful clear sunshine and warm temperatures in the mid-high 80s. Later in the day you will start to see a few clouds rolling in, often progressing more in the evenings around 5-6pm. Somewhere between 5-8pm you might get a sudden down pour of heavy rain for 20-30 minutes. You then might get a second wave of rain later after midnight. The rain will usually help cool down the temperature by about 5 degrees. Each following month you’ll get clouds rolling in a bit earlier, and rains lasting a bit longer till the peak in October where a lot of times you will see anywhere from 2-3 hours of heavy rain, but again most of that is in the evenings. After living in Costa Rica for a few years now, I’ve grown to really like the rainy season. You still get plenty of sunshine and warm temperature, but the rain helps keep the vegetation very green and lush. For me it’s part of the tropical ambiance here. The other great part of the rainy season is it is a great opportunity to find discounted rates on vacation rentals, condos, tours, and air fares. You can look here for some great deals for cabinas en Puntarenas and take advantage of the low rainy season rates! On my next entry I’ll talk more about what you can expect to find and some great examples.
