Why I Decided to Live in Costa Rica & NOT move back to the United States.

Living in Costa Rica was never in my plans. I’ve always been a planner in life, I consider myself to be very organized and like to always plan ahead with everything I do, but at a young age I quickly realized that most things in life simply don’t go as planned, that’s just really how life works.......

Ten years ago I would have never thought I’d be living in Costa Rica selling real estate in the Central Pacific coast, but fortunately here I am. I originally came to Costa Rica in 2005, with the goal of studying and learning spanish, immersing myself with a very endearing Costa Rican family in the Central Valley. My plan worked great, I had a good grasp of the language within 3 months, but I had not plan to meet my future wife and make my life in Costa Rica. As my wife and I started our life together we had plenty of options, we were free to live anywhere in the world, and as an American I have to admit that we strongly considered moving back to the United States. We were both in our 20s, so the work opportunities and the money that were found in the U.S. were extremely enticing. And then we thought about it a bit more, we thought about the lifestyle we have in Jaco, where we are a block to my office and a block to the beach, where I have the time and luxury to sit down and have breakfast, lunch, and dinner with my wife everyday. I thought of the wonderful schedules we have, how my wife is able to work from home, and that we are able to enjoy more vacations, dining, and recreation than most people get in the last ten years. The U.S. does have some opportunities, but at what cost? The workload, stresses, consumerism, all seem to take a toll on most people’s well being. When we thought about it more we realized how happy we already are, and how lucky we are to be living a life that many of my clients work 30-40 years so they can hopefully retire and experience something similar to what have right now in Jaco. I still love visiting friends and family in the U.S. and of course enjoy my vacations there, but I’m so thankful for the life we have in Costa Rica. That’s how life works sometimes, the most unexpected plans can be the greatest blessings.
